the night before my baby turned two

we played and read books
we marched upstairs to take a bath
as she was carried from the tub, wrapped in a towel, she said "goodbye bath. goodbye yellow duck. goodbye pink duck. goodbye watering can. goodbye red cup. goodbye letter 'Y'. goodbye other letters. goodbye water."
she picked out her jammies
we brushed teeth and hair. we said, "oh so pretty" in unison
she got in to bed with her soother and bunny and "other bunny"
we cuddled and gave kisses
she talked about her birthday "coming so soon", and her "happy birthday cake", and her "nummy happy birthday candles", and her party and friends.
she told me "i two!" and how she was "so excited!"
she asked for a song and listened intently
i marveled at how long her eyelashes are
we giggled and hugged
she slowly slid out of bed into my lap so i would hold her like "mommy's baby"

i asked, "are you my baby?"
"yes" she said
"yes, always... and are you and mommy friends?"
"yes.... best friends"

she slowly climbed back in to bed, cuddled her bunnies and sighed "so cozy" before drifting off to sleep

i crept out of her room and in to my own, feeling like my heart might burst trying to hold all the love i have for this child.
